Combatting Fuel Poverty for Islington Residents
Fuel Poverty is the inability to afford adequate warmth in the home and is responsible for an estimated 9,000 deaths a year in the UK. The causes are a combination of poor energy efficiency, low disposable household income and the high price of domestic fuel.
Islington is host to some of the country’s leading Energy Support and Advice services. They provide an excellent standard of face to face and remote support to residents struggling to heat and light their homes.
However, the scope of these services is limited, reaching less than 40% of Islington’s 22,400 Fuel Poor residents. We worked with Islington Council’s Housing department to explore ways to increase the reach of these services.
Islington Energy is an assessment to action platform equipping community leaders and family networks to support elderly residents.
1. Community Leaders are recruited by the council to become ‘Energy Champions’.
2. They are then equipped to facilitate conversations with Elderly residents about their energy efficiency using the Islington Energy App.
3. The app can then be used to recruit the resident’s existing support network to help their loved one tackle fuel poverty, supported by in built tutorials.
